Program Notes

Night Passage is commissioned by Meet-the-Composer/Readers Digest for the consortium of Present Music, Collage (Boston) and Pittsburg New Music Ensemble. As apparent as its title, Night Passage is very much associated with night--a warm night in the summer with the vailed cool of its metallic lights. For Ince, the work reflects a stroll taken at night during summer in an Aegean/Mediterranean (Turkey) or Scandinavian town where, actually, most of the night a unique daylight hovers. These towns can be very lively yet very peaceful and calm at the same time. One can visit various bars and nightclubs where there are different activities and atmospheres, or stand by the water where there are opportunities to dream and hallucinate. “I try to put you in a world where you can go through your own adventure” Ince says about the piece. ”I want to force your attention and put you in a state to feel something.
